This was supposed to be a new Tawhiri post. I’m still debating with myself if it’s worth putting aside my promised post, but I might as well jump in on the Marvel Mania for a post.
Firstly. I didn’t hate it.
Don’t kill me.
I have basically come to the agreement with myself that I can’t think too hard about a Marvel movie. And I can’t watch them more than once. Basically, they are all fun and games, until you let yourself realize how ridiculous it is.
There was one moment during the movie when holes popped open in the middle of a battle scene, and pegasus, talking trees, and aliens all rushed out together to fight. I sat there, looking at the screen thinking “this is the epitome of modern popular culture?”
Now, that’s not to say that I think it’s a bad movie. I think it’s, in part, because I’m worn out on the Marvel Universe. I think I’m worn out on franchises, redoes, and sequels in general. And I’m not sure if that’s just because there are more of those in film these days, or if maybe being part of the indie author community has shown me that there are a lot of original ideas out there that are being left on the table.
Its more than just that I’m worn out, though. There were a lot of things going on in this movie. It had to be the end to a lot of stories. It had to bring together a lot of themes and character arcs. It had to one-up any other battle or “hero” moment in the series. And with so much on its shoulders, I think it just sagged under the weight.
But instead of trying to talk about everything, let me make it a bit of a short-hand. Here are my lists of things I’m not sure about, things I like, and things I HATED. It won’t cover everything, but I think it’ll hit on the most important points to me. And, obviously, expect spoilers. Should I say that again? SPOILERS
Tony’s Death Scene
Ronin (angry Clint)
Thanos’ return as a villain/his motivations
End battle as a whole
Natasha telling Clint he’s still worth something, even if he’s broken.
Opening Scenes (before the 5 year jump)
Captain America facing down the entire army alone
Fat Thor and his story arc
Suicide framed as something heroic (Natasha’s death)
Let's say that again: Time travel plot holes
Personal pet-peeves: Wakanda STILL carrying around spears as if they have ANY value against a gun.
Charge of the women (So patronizing and manipulative)
Pollution of the “We don’t trade lives” theme.
Too many characters/loose ends.
Captain America’s end (Plot holeeeeeee)
Run time and how it was spent.
Rushed attempts to pack in emotional arcs (Starlord and Gamora, Spider-man, etc)
Yeah, that list of “hates” is pretty long, but I assure you, I don’t completely hate the movie. I think that it would have had a lot of disappointments no matter what they did. Expectations were just so high, and they had so much to accomplish. However, some of the things on my list of disappointments are pretty big. There were just so many places where I feel like Marvel let down their characters or - more importantly - their audience. For a movie that had as much attention from the world as End Game, I feel like they mishandled a lot of the trust put in them.
In the end, it was an enjoyable film to watch, but I don’t know if it will ever register as anything more meaningful than entertainment.
What did you think? Was End Game mostly an A+ in your book, or did you think it could have been better handled?
