One of my Writing Partners, a very talented Sci-Fi and Fantasy author named E.B. Dawson, recently gave me the honor of being one of the blogs to help her reveal the cover of her new release! This book is the third in a Sci-Fi series called "The Creation of Jack." The first book is beautifully, if a little unconventionally, written, and I would describe it as a blend of "Ender's Game" and "Bourne Identity" with a female protagonist.
Of course, if you have been following me for any amount of time, you've probably seen me bragging about E.B. Dawson. She has written a guest post on this blog, in fact. And I have reviewed her book Out of Darkness.
I had the chance, as Dawson's writing partner, to be able to read the manuscript of this novel. Guys, it is an amazing book. Powerful, emotional with deep themes and amazing characters. The action is fast-paced and the dialogue is witty and had me chuckling more than once. If you haven't read any of the series, you should jump over to Amazon or Kobo now and pick up a copy of the first book: Out of Darkness while it's on sale for only .99.
But right now, we are here to talk about Book 3: Under the Skin
After narrowly avoiding catastrophe on the world’s first space colony, humanity struggles to redefine itself. Logan, Druce, and the crew try to remain neutral. But tensions are mounting, and when Logan gets separated from the others, they will have to decide where their loyalties lie. As Logan’s longtime battle with her own identity comes to a head, she will find the fate of humanity lies in the balance.
A Snippet from the book for you!
“Trench, are you alright?” Logan asked.
“Oh, I’m fine, other than the fact that you just tried to kill me,” Veronica replied.
“Get his gun.”
“I’m sorry, Trench,” Veronica muttered to herself as she complied. “I would never risk your life, Trench.”
Logan ignored her and addressed the man.
“Who are you and who do you work for?”
“Now why should I tell you that?” the man asked.
“I am the one holding the gun,” Logan replied.
“If you wanted to kill me, I’d be dead already,” he said.
“Trench, get zip ties from the storage locker and start tying them up." Logan turned back to the man, "I’m giving you an opportunity to comply. When my team comes back they’re going to find out exactly who you are and who your enemies are.”
“I work for myself—wherever I can get a profit.”
“Hijacking a shuttle can be pretty profitable," Logan said, "But it’s a lot safer with no witnesses. You were very careful to use non-lethal force.”
“Maybe I don’t want murder on my record.”
“Or maybe you were trying to take me alive.”
“You’re not a woman to be reckoned with," the man said, "I’d like to be straight with you, but that’d leave me and my men at your mercy.”
“You’re the ones who picked a fight with me.”
“Fair point,” he said congenially, “But there was nothing personal. It was strictly business.”
“Someone hired you to capture her?” Veronica asked drily, “I hope they made it worth your while.”
“Well, ma’am, the truth is I’m beginning to question that myself.”
“Oh, you have no idea,” Logan couldn’t help but be amused. “In the interest of good faith, which will go a long way in helping me overlook the fact that you threatened Miss Trench, were you and your men the only ones contracted to kidnap me?”
“Do you know, I don’t see the harm in telling you that we weren’t?”
“So there’s a bounty on my head?”
“Yes, ma’am. But I wouldn’t be too worried. I only know a handful of entrepreneurs with the resources to give you a good chase, and not many of them have the proper motivations. Now, I hate to come off as needy, but seeing as I’ve offered information in good faith, I wonder if you could put some pressure on this wound before I pass out?”
“We’ll take care of your shoulder. But you don’t need to be conscious for that.”
Does it sound good to you? I personally love everything this author does and her grip on the genre and the characters is amazing. If you like Malfunction, you will probably love the Creation of Jack series as well. You can pre-order book three now!
